In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks videos and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. I served on the organizing committee for two local TEDx events including TEDxWenatcheeValley: Connecting the Dots in 2014, and TEDxWenatcheeED: ShiftED in 2018.
In 2019 the local TEDx organizing committee wanted to know if our approach to education was meeting the needs of a diverse student body and keeping pace with a dynamic employment landscape. Their shift:ED event provided an opportunity for people involved in all levels of education - from early childhood education to the workplace - to share what is working in education and explore new ways to meet the changing needs of a changing world. They needed an event logo and website that complemented the TEDx brand and reflected a forward-thinking community. I partnered with another local designer to develop the event logo and applied it to a Squarespace website to help market the event, thank our sponsors, host a livelstream, and finally serve as a home for all of the resulting video content.
In 2014 the local TEDx organizing committee needed print pieces that reflected the theme of the program, appealed to a target audience of local leaders, and adhered to the strict TEDx brand standards. A contemporary approach was used to complement the TEDx brand and reflect a forward-thinking community. A striking photo of the valley was sourced from a local photographer, and circular elements were used to connect content on the invitation, program, Facebook banner, program and badges. Little details like the use of a round, red sticker helped complete the design and carry the theme forward.
